What is the difference between DTU, RTU, FTU and TTU?

Information gathering, transmission, and feedback are the basis of wireless communication and remote control. The cooperation of associated hardware and software control units is essential to the realization of these functions. Every component is essential to the formation of a whole control system and depends on the others.

The four control and transmission units commonly used in industrial control: DTU, RTU, FTU, and TTU are introduced. Except for DTU, all other “TU” are Terminal Unit, which means terminal unit.

DTU

DTU (Data Transfer unit) is a data transmission unit, a type of gadget that transmits data remotely. Typically, it is employed to send data to a central monitoring system from distant equipment.

DTU generally includes data transmission and processing functions, and can transmit data to the monitoring center or data center through various communication methods (such as GPRS, E32dtu, LoRaWAN, etc.).

DTU can provide remote monitoring and data reporting by connecting a variety of smart devices, sensors, and instruments. It is widely used in industrial automation, environmental monitoring, smart cities, agricultural Internet of Things, transportation and other fields.

RTU

A remote terminal equipment unit is called an RTU (Remote Terminal Unit). It is a tool for gathering and sending data from remote devices to the central monitoring system.

It can carry out control commands and gather sensor data. In industrial automation and monitoring systems, RTU is crucial for controlling and monitoring the state of remote devices in real time.

RTU has strong computing and control functions and can execute local logic control instructions. Compared with PLC, RTU usually has stronger communication capabilities and larger storage capacity, and can work stably in extreme environments.

RTU can realize remote monitoring and control of equipment and facilities in remote or harsh environments. Mainly used in industrial automation systems, such as oil and gas pipeline monitoring, substation automation, water treatment plant monitoring, weather station data collection, etc.

FTU

One type of terminal is a feeder unit, or FTU. It is a device mostly used for power distribution system feeder monitoring and control. Usually mounted on the power distribution system feeder, the FTU gathers information on power, voltage, current, and other variables while keeping an eye on the feeder’s condition and distribution feeder level. Generally speaking, at least one feeder switch needs to be monitored by one FTU. Additionally, the FTU is capable of remote control tasks such circuit breaker switching. By using FTU, operators can keep an eye on the state of the feeders in real time, identify problems early, and take appropriate action to guarantee the power distribution system operates safely and steadily.

Therefore, FTU is mainly installed at switching equipment in substations, distribution stations or along feeders. It is an important part of the distribution automation system and is used to improve power supply reliability and shorten fault response time.

TTU

Transformer Terminal Units, or TTUs for short, are devices used to acquire transformer parameters. TTU focuses on the monitoring of transformers, especially the collection and transmission of transformer temperature.

It may include temperature sensors and data processing modules, which can monitor temperature changes in various parts of the transformer (such as oil temperature, winding temperature) in real time, provide timely warning of overheating risks, and prevent equipment damage or failure caused by excessive temperature.

TTU is mainly used for transformer monitoring in power systems, especially large power transformers or transformers at important load points, to ensure the safe operation of the transformer, extend the life of the equipment, and reduce power outages caused by abnormal temperatures.

The main differences between the four are different functions

As a general-purpose data transmission device, DTU is suitable for remote transmission of device data in a variety of scenarios.

RTU not only collects data, but also has strong control functions and environmental adaptability. It is often used for remote monitoring and control of industrial automation systems.

FTU is dedicated to feeder monitoring and control of power systems and supports distribution automation functions.

TTU focuses on temperature monitoring of transformers to ensure the safe operation of power equipment.

Collecting data is different

While FTU gathers information about power grid faults, TTU gathers information about transformer temperatures, and RTU primarily gathers information about the working condition and control of on-site equipment, DTU gathers data from a variety of on-site equipment.

Different transmission methods

While FTU transmits data by digital communication, TTU mostly employs dedicated transmission lines or wireless means, and RTU uses digital communication or wireless techniques to effectuate data transfer, DTU often uses wired or wireless ways to transmit data.

RTU stands for analog quantity collecting terminal module, and DTU stands for wireless data transmission module. It is a device that gathers analog variables and then uses A/D to transform them into digital representation. Throughout the entire system, the two components are essential.

The RTU gathers the signal, which is subsequently sent to the DTU. Through remote transmission, the DTU sends the signal that the RTU has collected to the control terminal. In a similar vein, the DTU carries out control functions via the RTU, and the wireless terminal can send the signal to the DTU via remote transmission.

In addition, FTU is used for the monitoring and control of distribution system feeders, which includes the functions of DTU and RTU. TTU is used for monitoring and control of transformers, which also includes the functions of DTU and RTU. Each terminal unit has its specific application fields and functions.
