Challenges of Applying Multi-Factor Authentication in KYC Verification

In this digital world where everything is getting advanced, including working ways, shopping, and studying, there is also a need to make the information secure and safe by using appropriate, and digital verification processes using KYC verification. 

Fraudulent activities are reported with higher stats, experts are worried about controlling such activities, and they are inventing maximum ways to secure personal and organizational insight information from hackers one of them is KYC Verification

If it gets caught in the wrong hands, this information can be utilized in crimes such as financial fraud, identity theft, or even corporate financial issues, causing a lot of trouble to the people or organizations who can accidentally get involved by hackers in such situations. 

Challenges of KYC Verification

Usernames are secured by keeping solid passwords to the systems they use so that no one can check their personal or professional information without permission during KYC verification.  Due to high risks, including data breaches, phishing attacks, and dangerously impacting criminal activities in the digital working world, an appropriate authentication control system is a compulsion to implement within any working space. 

For robust authentication assurance, Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is considered the minimum standard for an industry to implement KYC check within its systems. MFA includes the use of smart cards, passcodes, biometrics, or any token to be used at the entry of the organization, depending on the needs and criteria of an organization. 

Within the organizations, there is some access to specific authorized users to ads in some particular departments where they can get an entry by using biometrics or any other physical card, with the help of KYC verification and whatever the criteria the company has. In the past years, many changes have been made to the authentication systems, which include:

  • Data breaches proliferation that puts the secret credentials in the wrong hands. 
  • Primary mobile devices more secure to become more significant 
  • Digital transfer of interactions from physical ones

Firms Maintaining Legacy

Firms have to maintain legacy access control, and when they implement these changes, they have to be effective and quick to implement them. MFA implementation through KYC verification not only increases the user’s confidence level that their information is secure but also ensures that organizations from their end are also having their information in secure hands. 

MFA and 2FA, which stands for Two-Factor Authentication, are often used interchangeably. However, they have distinct working algorithms that keep the information safe and secure at their system’s end. MFA requires two or more authentication factors using KYC verification, such as a password and a fingerprint, while 2FA only requires two factors, typically a password and a verification code sent to a mobile device. 

Need of MFA

Passwords and usernames for the KYC verification process are the most reliable way to start securing the data. Following are mentioned some stats that explain why passwords became weak:

  • Usually, people use a common password, which is 123456
  • There is a common word, “SUMMER,” which is used by 42% of people
  • There are many password tools available, and around 54% of organizations do not have access to those tools
  • Long passwords are not encouraged, but 93% of systems are forced to have eight or more eight characters in the password

These statistics clearly show that simple password-keeping methods are not efficient, are discouraged, and are considered non-friendly. Traditional password-keeping methods fall short of serving their main purpose of safeguarding and securing digital systems. 

Challenges Included in KYC verification system

  • Fail to Determine Accurate Identity: Easy access can be gained through password within the system. Attackers always try to hack the system’s legitimate passwords first, and if the passwords are accessible and too long with no special characters and digits in them, then systems can be hacked successfully by them even if they have been passed through the KYC verification process.
  • Compromising Passwords: Malware attacks are those attacks that can hack a system’s passwords easily. When users put simple passwords to their systems using KYC verification, they usually keep the general ones to keep them remembered by them. This causes trouble for users but makes hackers happy as they always start hacking by applying simple, common passwords first. Sometimes, users do this by keeping the same passwords to remember them to their different portals of social IDs, which also helps hackers hack all their IDs or systems at once.
  • Challenges Administrators Faced During Password Creation: If special characters do not support longer passwords, then they can be hacked easily; therefore, in order to make long passwords secure, application owners tighten the security and make it combustion from the backend server of their security systems that the user must have two or more special characters in their passwords which they created using KYC verification
  • Password Changing Strategies: Special characters are difficult to hack as the algorithms at the backend of such characters are very difficult to crack. In KYC verification process password reset is encouraged after three to six weeks, as this will not help hackers to try repeatedly, and this will also help the backend of the system to keep security terms updated and secure. 

Final Thoughts

Financial institutions have different scenarios for keeping their data safe including KYC verification. They also have to secure their employee’s employees’ identities, specifically those who work in their finance departments. Every concern needs to be raised and focused on correctly, as it is essential to consider it timely and appropriate.
