“The Bucket Hat Mystery” is one of the most exciting new episodes. It looks into the murder of Jon Tokuhara, a well-known acupuncturist from Waipahu, Hawaii. On January 13, 2022, Tokuhara was found dead in his clinic. Later, the police said that Eric Thompson shot Tokuhara out of jealousy after finding out that his wife was cheating on him.
It was a big step forward when investigators found a Quiksilver bucket hat near the crime scene. Standard DNA tests couldn’t find the suspect, but new technology changed the case.

The Forensic Innovation: TrueAllele On Dateline
There were mixed DNA traces in the hat that traditional methods couldn’t figure out. Dr. Mark Perlin of Cybergenetics in Pittsburgh made TrueAllele Casework, an advanced forensic software that the police used.
TrueAllele figured out that there was a 1 in 16.4 trillion chance that Thompson was the source of the DNA. Later, this finding was upheld in court, making a big change in how forensic evidence can be used.
More than 750 organisations have used TrueAllele to solve more than 1,400 cases. Dateline showed how technology is changing the way justice is done. There were also statements from Cybergenetics in the programme that said, “TrueAllele gives agencies the power to solve crimes, get justice for victims, and clear the names of the innocent.”
Dateline is back in Palm Springs with “The Prince, The Whiz Kid, and The Millionaire”
Another unforgettable episode looks back at the murder of Palm Springs socialite Cliff Lambert, which Dateline first covered in 2011. Kaushal Niroula, Danny Garcia, David Replogle, and Miguel Bustamante were found guilty of killing Lambert for money.
Josh Mankiewicz, a Dateline reporter, looked into how people ignored warnings about the suspects. Tyson Wrensch, a victim of fraud, had told the police about Garcia years before the murder, but they told him, “We can’t really do anything until someone gets hurt.”
In 2016, Lambert’s remains were found, and four years later, they were identified, solving one of California’s longest-running mysteries. The 2025 follow-up episode brought back interest around the world, revealing new lawsuits and the chaotic aftermath, which included Niroula’s death in prison and Garcia and Replogle’s ongoing legal manoeuvres.
Dateline’s podcast “The Last Appeal” reveals wrongdoing in Texas courts
Dateline’s impact has grown beyond TV. Its hit podcast “The Last Appeal,” which came out in October 2025, looked into the case of Robert Roberson, a Texas man on death row for allegedly killing his daughter based on the discredited Shaken Baby Syndrome theory.
Dateline uncovered shocking judicial misconduct through interviews and legal analysis: Judge Bascom Bentley had illegally allowed the removal of the child’s life support, a fact that had been kept secret for more than 20 years.
Attorney Gretchen Sween told Dateline, “This case was bad from the start.” Judges should never break the law, assume guilt, or hide evidence.
The revelations sparked widespread outrage, with over 200,000 petition signatures and bipartisan lawmakers demanding a retrial. Roberson’s case has since become a national symbol of accountability and reform in forensic science.
