Add Drama to Living Areas With Hanging Lamps and Floor Lamps

Modern pendant lighting adds drama and interest to living areas. They may complement any style of furniture.

Kitchens are a natural place for hanging lamps since they provide task lighting while keeping countertops clear of clutter. Make sure to install a dimmer so you can change from task to ambient lighting when cooking!

Pendant Lights

There’s a large selection of pendant lights available to match your unique home décor. These single-light fixtures can act as a focal point like chandeliers or be minimal accent pieces. Choose a pendant light with trim to coordinate with room finishes for a uniform look or opt for a fixture with a different material, such as natural stone, wood or wicker, for an eclectic style.

The shade of a pendant light can impact its light emission. Glass shades, such as mouth-blown Murano flutes and industrial ribbed globes, diffuse light for ambient lighting. Fabric or plastic shades, such as those fashioned from enameled or hand-hammered metal, confine light in one direction to focus task lighting.

If you want to make a statement with your pendant lights, arrange them in groups in multiples of three or five for a balanced effect. Coordinate the metal finish of each fixture by repeating it in cabinet knobs, faucets or seats to create a cohesive look.

Ceiling Lights

A ceiling light, or pendant lamp, is a lone light fixture that hangs from the ceiling usually suspended by a cord, chain or metal rod. They are available in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and designs, with many contemporary fixtures offering an emphasis on style and quality.

Pendant lights are perfect for illuminating large rooms and spaces with low ceilings, or even rooms where a chandelier might not be appropriate. These lights can also be used in multiples to create a dramatic effect over dining tables and kitchen islands.

For rooms with higher ceilings, flush mounts and semi-flush mounts offer a sleek option that works well in conjunction with many other types of lighting fixtures. For a more architectural look, track and monorail lighting options provide directional illumination with a decidedly industrial aesthetic. In addition, ceiling lights like recessed lights can be used to illuminate basements or water-intensive environments. Most of these light fixtures are constructed with glass which appropriately diffuses and directs the light throughout a room.

Floor Lamps

Unlike hanging lights, floor lamps may have a base that stands up on its own or rest on the ground. Some, like the slender Philips Hue Bloom lamp, blend white and colored light for an ambient glow that’s customizable to your liking.

Some are a bit more elaborate, such as torchiere floor lamps that typically aim light upwards and serve as a focal point in large rooms. The tallest of these can be 6 or 7 feet in height.

A more modern take on a traditional style is the arc lamp, which features a curved rod that angles up and over from the base, creating a stylish silhouette that’s great for lighting up large spaces. A variety of metals can be used in these lamps, which can add a contemporary feel to any space. Often, they’re optimized for ambient lighting and can be placed over couches or other furniture. They’re also often more affordable than other types of floor lamps.

Table Lamps

Whether your style skews traditional or contemporary, there are table lamps that work for every taste. These subtle accents have a big design impact that will leave guests with a positive impression of your home.
